Main Beach — Crystal Lake's Waterfront
Main Beach is the crown jewel of Crystal Lake's park system. Located on the shores of Crystal Lake (the actual lake), it offers:
- Swimming: Lifeguard-supervised swimming from Memorial Day through Labor Day
- Beach area: Sandy beach with gradual entry — great for young kids
- Concerts: The Friday Night Concert Series runs June through August with free live music at 7 PM
- Lakeside Festival: The annual Fourth of July celebration features carnival rides, food vendors, and fireworks over the lake
- Boating: Crystal Lake Boat Club operates from the waterfront
Tips: Arrive before 11 AM on hot summer weekends for parking. Bring sand toys for younger kids. The beach gets crowded during Lakeside Festival — locals know to arrive early or watch fireworks from the surrounding streets.
Three Oaks Recreation Area
Three Oaks Recreation Area is a McHenry County Conservation District property that serves the Crystal Lake and Cary communities. It features:
- Trails: Miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in winter
- Fishing: Stocked ponds for catch-and-release fishing
- Picnic areas: Sheltered and open picnic spots perfect for family gatherings

Three Oaks is less crowded than Main Beach and offers a more nature-focused experience. It's ideal for families with kids who need to burn energy on trails.

The Crystal Lake Park District maintains playgrounds and sports fields across the city. Some highlights:
- Depot Park (downtown) — Home to the Farmers Market, playground equipment, and walking paths
- Veteran Acres Park — 145 acres of forests, trails, lake access, and nature center
