Last updated: 2026-07 · Crystal Lake Insights

The Fox River Trail is one of the premier multi-use trails in northeastern Illinois, and Crystal Lake-area residents have easy access to it through Cary and Algonquin. The paved trail follows the Fox River valley, offering miles of scenic biking, running, and walking through forest preserves, small downtowns, and riverfront parks.

Trail Overview

The Fox River Trail runs approximately 40 miles from Algonquin to Aurora, following the Fox River through Kane County. For Crystal Lake residents, the closest access points are:

  • Cary: Multiple trail access points along the Fox River, roughly 4 miles from Crystal Lake
  • Algonquin: Trail access at the Fox River and Algonquin Road area, about 6 miles east

The trail is paved and flat, making it accessible for all fitness levels. It's wide enough for both cyclists and pedestrians, though it gets busy on summer weekends.

Best Segments for Crystal Lake Residents

Cary to Fox River Grove (3.5 miles): A scenic, shaded segment that's perfect for a morning bike ride or after-work run. Passes through wooded areas and along the river. Relatively uncrowded on weekdays.

Algonquin to East Dundee (5 miles): Slightly more developed, passing through downtown Algonquin and along commercial areas. Good for a longer ride with food stop options along the way.

Trail Tips & Etiquette

  • Stay right, pass left. Call out "On your left!" when passing slower traffic.
  • Dogs on leash. Required on the trail — it's shared by families with young children.
  • Best times: Early morning and weekday evenings for fewer crowds. Avoid Saturday afternoons in summer.
  • Parking: Free parking at Cary trail access points and at Algonquin Road trailhead.
  • Winter conditions: The trail is NOT plowed. Conditions vary — some segments are passable, others ice over.
