Last updated: 2026-07 · Crystal Lake Insights

Congratulations on your move to Crystal Lake! Whether you're relocating from across the country or from another Chicago suburb, this guide walks you through every step of getting settled — from the essentials (utilities, driver's license, schools) to the insider tips that make the difference between surviving and thriving in your new community.

We've organized this as a chronological checklist: what to do before you arrive, during your first week, your first month, and your first season. Bookmark this page and check things off as you go.

Before You Move — 2-4 Weeks Out

Utilities to set up in advance:

  • Electric: ComEd (comed.com or 1-800-334-7661). Allow 3-5 business days for new service.
  • Gas: Nicor Gas (nicorgas.com or 1-888-642-6748). Schedule connection for your move-in day.
  • Water/Sewer: City of Crystal Lake Utility Billing (815-459-2020). Service transfer requires a visit or call.
  • Internet: Comcast/Xfinity (primary provider), AT&T Fiber (available in newer areas). Schedule install — techs book up fast.
  • Trash/Recycling: Groot Industries (included in your property tax bill for most Crystal Lake addresses). City-issued bins will be at your curb.

Other advance steps:

  • Forward mail with USPS (usps.com/manage/forward.htm)
  • Notify your employer of new address
  • Transfer or acquire homeowner's/renter's insurance (Illinois requires different coverage than some states)
  • If you have school-age children, contact the school district to begin enrollment paperwork

First Week — The Essentials

Update your driver's license (required within 90 days):

  • Visit the nearest Secretary of State facility (McHenry or Woodstock locations are least busy)
  • Bring: current out-of-state license, Social Security card, two proofs of residency (utility bill + lease/deed)
  • Illinois issues REAL ID — bring a passport or birth certificate too if you want one
  • Budget $30 for the license fee

Register your vehicle (required within 30 days for out-of-state):

  • Same Secretary of State visit — bring your current title, insurance card, and proof of emissions testing (if your vehicle is 4+ years old)
  • License plates: ~$151/year for passenger vehicles
  • Illinois requires front AND rear plates

Register to vote:

  • McHenry County Clerk's office or online at ova.elections.il.gov
  • You'll need your Illinois driver's license number

Set up your mailbox:

  • Check if your home has a curbside box, cluster mailbox, or P.O. box requirement
  • Inform your carrier of your last name for delivery

First Month — Schools & Community

School enrollment (if applicable):

  • District 47 (K-8): Call (815) 788-5000 or visit d47.org. Bring birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency (2 documents), and prior school records/transcripts.
  • District 155 (High School): Call (815) 455-8500 or visit d155.org. Same documents plus any IEP/504 plan paperwork.
  • District 26 (K-8 for south Crystal Lake): Call (847) 516-6530.
  • Registration is year-round but processing takes 3-7 days. Start early to secure transportation routes.

Get connected locally:

  • Crystal Lake Public Library card — Free for residents. Bring your driver's license and proof of address. Access to books, digital media, programs, meeting rooms, and more.
  • Crystal Lake Park District — Register for programs at crystallakeparks.org. Resident rates require proof of address.
